SweetWater Brewing Flows into Acadiana

Craft Brewery to Expand Louisiana Footprint with Schilling Distributing Co.

LAFAYETTE, LA; (7.18.16) – SweetWater Brewing Co. continues its expansion in Louisiana with the following parishes: Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion.  Schilling Distributing, a 66 years old, family owned company, will lead distribution of the brew starting July 18. 

“We are excited for the opportunity to partner with such a tremendous brewery and being able to bring another great portfolio of beers to the people of Acadiana,” said Buddy Schilling, General Manager of Schilling Distributing. “SweetWater makes outstanding liquid that will fit right in with our Cajun culture.

Craft beer lovers will find SweetWater’s signature 420 Extra Pale Ale, award winning IPA, crowd pleasing Blue, plus seasonals like summer’s popular Goin’ Coastal IPA with pineapple, and limited release styles like Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, and Pit & Pendulum.  SweetWater will be on draft at bars and restaurants, in grocery stores, package stores, and specialty bottle shops. 

Those in Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion Parishes should follow SweetWater’s Louisiana Facebook page and Twitter handle for information on launch events, and where they can spot the brewery’s iconic rainbow trout tap handles. LAFAYETTE, LA.; May 16, 2015 – The Brewers Association has declared American Craft Beer Week (ACBW), a celebration of U.S. small and independent craft brewers. ACBW is an exciting opportunity for craft brewers to commemorate their art and tradition with enthusiasts across the country. Welcome Bossier City’s Flying Heart

Firehouse Blonde will be initial rollout brand; consumers can find using LiquidFinder App on smartphones

LAFAYETTE, LA.; February 22, 2016 – Bossier City’s Flying Heart Brewing has agreed to join the Schilling Distributing family, with beer set to roll out in the Acadiana market on the week of February 22nd. The initial offering will be Firehouse Blonde, a blazing crisp brew is named for the brewery’s location in Bossier City, Historic Firehouse No. 6. This take on a Kolsch style ale has bright and clean flavor of pilsner grain that compliments its soft- hop aroma. This is a well-balanced beer for the novice tasters, as well as, experienced connoisseurs. It is currently only available in draught; other brands will follow in the coming months.

Consumers will be able to find what bars and restaurants are carrying Flying Heart by downloading Schilling’s LiquidFinder App, available for free on both Apple and Android smartphones (search “liquidfinder” or “schilling”). This information can also be found at www.liquidfinder.com. Firehouse Blonde is already available at Tigue “Moore” Field for Ragin’ Cajuns Baseball games.

Flying Heart Brewing is a labor of love, pure and simple. Each of the three couples involved in the venture have come together through a convergence of ideas and complementary goals. They all started as friends that shared a love of creative expression. Although the concept of craft brewing was introduced rather off-handedly, the art and science and fun appealed to each on many different levels. What started as an interesting weekend challenge rapidly escalated into an obsession that led to intense academic study and constant upgrading of equipment because the more they knew, the more they wanted to expand their creations. A pleasant result of that kind of passion was a substantial amount of free beer to go around and the overwhelmingly positive responses created a momentum that has taken on a life of its own.

The namesake of Flying Heart pays tribute to Ben Hart’s family brand from his home of Washington State. Ben grew up in one of our country’s premier craft brewing regions and came by his love of same very naturally. That being said, Flying Heart Brewing currently has six labels that cover the gambit from a smooth black ale that boasts a moderate hop content to a bourbon barrel variety of dark ale, to several crisp, lighter ales, each with their own distinct character.

Flying Heart is the seventh Louisiana brewery in the Schilling portfolio, joining Bayou Teche Brewing (Arnaudville), Parish Brewing (Broussard), Tin Roof (Baton Rouge), Chafunkta (Mandeville), Gnarly Barley (Hammond) and Covington Brewhouse (Covington).

Ragin' Cajuns Ale has Arrived!

There will be something new on tap at Cajun Field on Saturday for UL Lafayette’s first home football game of the season: Ragin’ CajunsTM Genuine Louisiana Ale.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s stadium is one of nine locations where the craft beer will initially be served. Ragin’ CajunsTM Genuine Louisiana Ale is the result of a partnership between Bayou Teche Brewing and the University.

UL Lafayette already has a successful beverage and food line that includes Ragin’ Red®, a custom blend of seasonings; Ragin’ Cajuns Strong Championship Blend coffee, produced by Mello Joy; and the Ragin’ Cajun Burger, which is sold exclusively by local Sonic Drive-Ins.

“We were looking for a product that would be suitable for tailgating before Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns athletic events. A craft beer is the perfect fit,” said Aaron Martin, director of the University’s Office of Communications and Marketing. “The ale’s slogan is French, ‘ça va mieux avec des amis,’ which means ‘It goes better with friends.’ That’s so appropriate because it reflects the hospitality of the Cajun and Creole cultures in Acadiana.”

Ragin’ CajunsTM Genuine Louisiana Ale is only available on tap now; a bottled version will be introduced in time for the University’s 70th Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Karlos Knott, president of Bayou Teche Brewing, said it was inspired by a staple ingredient that’s grown in Louisiana: rice. Other ingredients are barley and multiple additions of German-grown, noble hops. The combination, he said, is “a magnificent balance of hop bitterness, taste and aroma.”

Bayou Teche Brewing’s flagship product is Bière Pâle, a pale ale. Its beers are distributed throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and in New York.

Martin said part of the proceeds of the new craft beer’s sales will be used to support the University’s academic, research and athletics programs. UL Lafayette has allowed beer to be sold during football games at Cajun Field since 2009. Today, more than 30 universities allow beer sales in their football stadiums. Beer had been sold for many years at UL Lafayette basketball and baseball games prior to 2009. Ragin’ CajunsTM Genuine Louisiana Ale will be sold by Schilling Distributing Company, the official beer distributor of Ragin’ Cajuns® Athletics.

Schilling Announces $1M Official Ragin’ Cajuns Sponsorship

Schilling Distributing Company loves sporting events, tailgating and other activities that bring people together. In its latest community venture, Schilling is now the official beer distributor of Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics

Schilling Distributing has announced a $1 million sponsorship with the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Foundation. The deal gives Schilling official sponsor designation for four years, with an option to renew for another four years.

“We’ve been steadfast supporters of the Acadiana community for 65 years. Throughout the decades, we’ve supported the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the Ragin’ Cajuns,” said Herbert “Herbie” E. Schilling II, president and chairman of Schilling Distributing Company, Inc.

Locally owned Schilling Distributing has been selling Anheuser-Busch products to the Acadiana area since 1950. Today, it is a complete beverage distributor, working with local breweries such as Bayou Teche and Parish, as well as wines, spirits and non-alcohol beverages like RC Cola and Sparkling Ice.

“The University and its athletics programs benefit our community’s economy and provide positive national attention. The coaches are great ambassadors and the student-athletes achieve on the playing field and as scholars,” said Schilling.

“We at Schilling are furthering our support of the teams, the fans and our community. We have a tradition of coming together in this region.”

In addition to financial support, Schilling is providing alcohol education resources for students at UL Lafayette. Each year, Schilling will provide a speaker of national prominence to address alcohol awareness with University students. The first presentation is scheduled for Sept. 16.

“The Schilling and Ragin’ Cajuns brands are both huge assets of the Acadiana community,” said Wayne Elmore, past chairman of the RCAF board. “We are glad to partner with Schilling to expand the visibility and economic strength of our teams and the community.”

“Schilling is family-owned company that is investing a million dollars to essentially support our region’s economy. We hope other businesses will step up to support the Ragin’ Cajuns,” said Schilling.

Herbert Schilling named 2015 Rice Festival Honeree

CROWLEY – Herbert E. Schilling II, known as “Herbie” to his friends, has been chosen as Honoree of the 2015 International Rice Festival, according to Troy Perry, festival president.

This year’s festival dates are October 15-18.

Herbie was born in Lafayette on Oct. 12, 1949. He was the only child of Herbert and Olga Richard Schilling.

Herbie’s mother was from Jeanerette.  She was a 1932 graduate of SLI and received her master’s degree from LSU.  She was a professor at SLI/USL for 34 years.

His father came to Lafayette in the late 1920s to play baseball. By 1932, he was co-owner of the Lafayette White Sox, and then became a co-founder of the Evangeline League. The elder Schilling was involved with baseball until he was called to serve his country during World War II at the age of 37.  After the war, he returned to Lafayette to discover that the Evangeline League and his team were no longer a viable business option. He was presented the opportunity in 1949 to become an  Anheuser-Busch (“AB”) wholesaler, who brewed only Budweiser and Michelob beers at that time.

Schilling Distributing opened its doors Jan. 1, 1950. 

“Herbie” is a 1972 graduate of USL with a degree in business management. He was a four-year letterman on the USL golf team that won the Gulf State Conference Championship in 1971 and played in the NCAA II Championship in Chico, California.

He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army Reserves and when he returned from active duty went to work in the family beer business. 

Schilling’s father died in 1981 and it became necessary for him to take over leadership of the company. He was required by his father to work in every position and division of the company starting with summers off during high school and while attending college. His degree in business management and his working knowledge of all divisions of the company served him well as he moved from sales manager to general manager, vice president and president.

Under his leadership, Schilling Distributing achieved the inaugural Ambassador of Excellence award from Anheuser-Busch in 1981. Only six distributorships out of 1,470 distributors nationwide received this honor. It was awarded for overall performance in every facet of the company which did not include sales criteria.

August Busch III, the 1965 Rice Festival Honoree, came to Lafayette to present the award at the Grand Opening of the new Schilling facility on  Pinhook Road on April 9, 1983.

Schilling was selected to serve on the prestigious AB Wholesale Advisory Panel in 1983. There were 15 wholesaler principals selected out of the 1,470 wholesalers in the country at that time. He was then elected chairman of the Advisory Panel in 1985 by his fellow panel members. He was, and still is, the youngest chairman ever elected. This position required meeting with Busch and his management team every three months. The education from that one year rivaled four years of college.

Schilling has grown Schilling Distributing from a 1 million case annual volume in 1981 to over 4 million case volume. He opened the present office and warehouse at 2901 Moss St. in 2003. It is worth noting that the location was his father’s farm, which was purchased in 1933.

A recent addition of 42,000 square feet of warehouse has just been completed providing a total of 104,000 square feet of controlled environment warehouse space and over 180,000 square feet with ambient area, office and mechanic shop.

He has expanded the products distributed from exclusively AB beers to over 200 brands of beer, non-alcoholic products, water, along with a varied selection of wine and spirits.

In addition to his leadership role in Schilling Distributing, Schilling has proven to be an active entrepreneur. He has started many different businesses beginning with the building of Pelican Park in Carencro. The park opened in 1987 as the premier softball complex in the United States, and his development of that facility led to his induction in the USSSA Hall of Fame.

From that starting point, he purchased two local radio stations, and changed their formats along with personnel. They are now known as “The Dawg” and “Planet Radio.”

Currently, he is part owner of various other business entities and serves on their board: Louisiana Rice Mill, L.L.C.; Fairway Logistics, L.L.C.; Acadiana Waste Services, L.L.C.; iTA Truck Sales and Service, L.L.C./Idealease, with locations in Houma, New Orleans, Lake Charles, and Lafayette.

Of course, his partnership in Louisiana Rice Mill, LLC, is the reason he is being honored. His association with the rice industry and his relationship with all the rice mills in Acadiana began under the tutorship of his father. Mermentau Rice, Inc., forerunner to Louisiana Rice Mill, was established in 1999. The partnership consisted of Isaac “Butch” Hanks, Bobby Hanks, Alan Hebert, Kenny Hix, Vic Segura, Senator Mike Michot and Schilling.

He has also been involved in various non-profit organizations. In 1980, he resurrected the Louisana Open State golf tournament. He then founded The Louisiana Open, Inc., a non-profit organization that runs the Chitimacha Louisiana Open’s Web.Com Tour, which is the pathway to the PGA Tour. Since 1986, the tournament has donated a total of over $4 million to charities in the Acadiana area such as Boys & Girls Club, Hospice of Acadiana, Inc., Children’s Museum, Hearts of Hope and Louisiana CASA to name a few.

He also started the Recycling Foundation, which provided curbside recycling to residents of the city of Lafayette.

As a lifelong resident of Lafayette, community has a strong influence on Schilling’s decision to become involved in community organizations that positively affect the growth of Lafayette and the Acadiana area. He was a founder of the Upper Lafayette Economic Develop Foundation. He is a member of the CEO Advisory Board of the newly formed One Acadiana that serves nine parishes, and a member of Blueprints Louisiana. He is also a member of Mystic Krewe of Louisianians and Krewe of Gabriel.

Schilling is a member of the Oakbourne Country Club. He served as the Greens Committee chairman in 1984, president in 1985, and was responsible for the construction of the redesigned course that exists today.

He is also a member of the National Beer Wholesalers Association, Beer Industry League of Louisiana and the Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association.

Being an avid golfer, Schilling is a member of The Olympic Golf Club in San Francisco, Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club on Lake Tahoe, and Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville, South Carolina.

He is married to Renee Vidrine Schilling from Galliano, a graduate of Louisiana State University. They are members of St. John’s Cathedral Catholic Church. They have a blended family of eight children and 17 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.

Those that know Renee Schilling credit her for Herbie’s success — and you will receive no argument from him.

Schilling will be recognized at the International Rice Festival Honoree Social and Queen’s Ball to be held Sept. 19 at the Rice Festival Building.
